I remember the first time I played Dynasty Warriors. It was absurd to cut down thousands of enemies. The battles were over the top, all set to ridiculously good rock music. It was, I’ll say it, over-the-top, but it was the ultimate power fantasy.
The sheer scale of combat, the larger-than-life battles, and that unmistakable rock soundtrack made it a one-of-a-kind experience. Now, with Dynasty Warriors: Origins, the series takes everything that made it fun and refines it into something even better.
This is the Dynasty Warriors game we’ve all been waiting for, and in this review, I’ll break down why exactly I think it is so worth playing on PS5.

The Combat Is Actually Fun and Fluid
Dynasty Warriors has always been about effortless power—one warrior taking on an entire army. But this time, it feels more refined.
The stiffness is gone; the fighting feels fast, fluid, and smooth. It’s like you’re slicing through butter with a hot knife, and this time, the butter is literally an army of hundreds of warriors.
Another thing I like is that the boss fights now have some depth. In previous versions, the captains and officers justseemed to be damage sponges, but not anymore. You will find that the bosses will back a counter punch and fight strategically, so your battles become intense. You will need to develop skills like dodging, parrying, shield-breaking, and blocking because you need these at different moments in the game to survive. I loved how you could break an enemy’sguard meter and then obliterate them with a cinematic special attack.
The weapons also feel very unique. I think there are 12 weapon types, and all of them have very different mechanics. For example, stance switching with fists or timing-based attacks with thrown wheels. So, all I’m saying is that you still get to clean through waves of grunts, but in a way that’s not soulless but full of energy.
The Battles Feel Like Actual Wars Now
There is a definite sense of quality to the chaos of the battlefield with Dynasty Warriors Origin. This time, you feel like you’re actually in the middle of a tactical war zone. First of all, the scale is insane. We’re talking Total War levels of massive armies on screen. Your battles seem straight out of a cinema. Your enemies and allies will react to what is happening around them. Soldiers will panic when they arelosing, retreat when a base falls, and cheer when a battle is won. It feels so alive, and your tactics will matter a lot.
You cannot just charge the enemy general anymore. You will need morale, allies, and a strategy to win. Forces and objectives will change how battles play out. If you help an ally in battle, that could open a new route and turn the tide of the war completely. The timeline feature is a lifesaver, so you will never get stuck after a bad decision. You can rewind the battles to key moments and try a different approach.
A Story That’s Actually Engaging
Let’s be honest here: no one plays Dynasty Warriors for the story. Still, Origins has managed to make it interesting. A single protagonist helps to keep the story focused, so you’renot bouncing between 50-plus characters. In fact, you play as a mysterious warrior known as nothing more than the Guardian of Peace and you keep collecting trophies on your way up.
I think the key kingdoms narrative brings structure to the game. Past games felt like a history textbook at times, but here, the game unfolds in a way that makes sense and feels a bit more personal. I loved how single choices changed the course of the game. For example, halfway through, you’vegot to pick a faction—Wei, Shu, or Wu—and that will completely change the stories, the battles, and the allies.
The world map makes the game feel more immersive, so you’re not picking missions from a menu. You are almost exploring an RPG-style overworld, talking to characters, and preparing for battle. If you’re not in battle, the side characters are still here. You will fight alongside them, bond with them, and watch their stories unfold too.
There is so much more to like about Playing Dynasty Warriors Origin on PS5. It respects the player’s time. You don’t have to replay the entire game three times to see different faction stories. You can carry over your progress and jump back to key moments. I think the RPG-style world map is a throwback to classic JRPGs like Final Fantasy 7 and Chrono Trigger. Overall, I think the game gets what players like: the fights are huge, the scale of fantasy is huge, and the rock music is banging. It is all that you expect in the ideal Dynasty Warriors game, done a bit better than ever before.
