ToggleSimilar Games Like Spider Man for PS4
Today, we brought you some of the absolute best games like Spider-Man that provide you with a huge world to explore and a lot of exciting gameplay elements.
Batman: Arkham Knight
Batman’s Arkham series taught us that superhero action games can be great. The first game, Arkham Asylum was a huge success and its sequel, Arkham City, improved upon almost everything its predecessor brought to the table and was praised as one of the best video-games ever made with stunning visuals, characters, acting and side-quests.
Batman: Arkham Knight ends the series on a high note with new additions such as your Batmobile and carries the previous titles’ strongest points such as fun side-quests and collectibles, extremely well-acted characters, improved combat and a great story. It is a game that every action game fan must play.
GTA 5
Whenever someone mentions “open-world action”, I am sure that almost everyone thinks of GTA fist. It really needs no introduction since the series is probably the biggest gaming franchise of all time and it got even bigger on GTA 5. It broke Guinness Records on sales and has been awarded multiple GOTY awards. In this open-world action game, you control the lives of 3 criminals. Singleplayer experience is nearly perfect: The world is big and alive, there is a lot of stuff to do, missions are original and well-designed. With the best gta 5 mods, you can bring characters to life with top-notch acting and the story is excellent.
Even though it had problems on its multiplayer mode GTA Online for while and got into some controversies with the PC players on the modding scene, GTA 5 is still one of the best -if not the best- open-world action games of all time. If you want to give up some superhero action for some criminal crime spree, jump right in.
We have also written about some games like GTA V, in case you want to see.
Prototype 2
Ever played a superhero action game and wondered what would happen if our protagonist wasn’t such a kind guardian angel that’s fighting for the good of its people? Well, if you did, Prototype 2 can answer your question. In the first game, we controlled Alex Mercer, a mutant that didn’t ask for his powers and was willing to do everything he can (Like killing thousands of soldiers and innocent people.) to avenge what happened to him. In the second game, we take control of Sgt. James Heller with one aim: Killing Alex Mercer. And to do that, you basically destroy everything in your path.
While the story gives you a motivation, game’s main focus is its gameplay; the combat is brutal, gory and extremely satisfying. You truly feel like a predator while slaughtering your enemies; be it other mutants or military groups. The combat is mostly similar to the first game while borrowing some elements from Batman: Arkham series. It is a fun and brutal experience to the end. So, are you ready to kill your maker?
God of War
Sony’s God of War series has been an industry standard for third-person action games for a long time. Almost every single GoW game received high scores from both fans and critics with smooth and brutal combat, thought-out puzzles and a rage-fueled story. We thought the series ended with God of War 3, but Sony took a different turn and gave us a non-linear, open-world action game with a much calmer Kratos trying to survive with his son.
This is a much different game from previous GoW titles. The world is open and unlocks with story seamlessly, the combat is more detailed, brutal and involves your son as a combat partner, you can upgrade your armor and equipment and the characters are much more grounded. Visually, it is one of the most fantastic games of all time. This is a masterpiece that every gamer must play.

Horizon: Zero Dawn
As another PS4 exclusive, Horizon Zero Dawn distinguishes itself from other open world games with its original art style and open-world. You are thrown into a futuristic post-apocalyptic world as Aloy; the humanity was set back to a tribal-state again with bows and arrows, while there are animal-like, wild robots roaming the world.
The game borrows a lot from other open-world action games with similar progression, climbing towers to unlock parts of the map and a half-stealth system. Its main focus is its satisfying, strategic combat that requires you to dodge and aim well while exploiting your enemies’ weak points. It’s original and mysterious world comes together beautifully with great gameplay, leaving you no choice to play it as a PS4 owner.
Infamous: Second Son
You may think that Sony has a soft spot for open-world action games with its vast number of exclusive open-world action games. Infamous: Second Son is the third game to Infamous series that started on PS3. It borrows a lot from its predecessors with its flashy, destructive combat, smooth city traversal with parkour and special powers and a story based on moral choices.
While almost every character is a new face, they are all acted perfectly to bring you a believable story. The morality system falls a bit short compared to the previous titles with its overly-simplistic “A or B” choices, but the excellent combat makes up for it with different powers to good and bad playthroughs. It is yet another great action game for PS4 owners.
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
Middle Earth: Shadow of War, builds on the foundation of Shadow of Mordor in every way. The combat is, even more, satisfying with combos and brutal takedowns, the Nemesis system is improved and you can conquer forts now with your own brain-washed Uruk army.
The combat is better than ever. With tons of different weapons, powers, combos and well-animated finishing moves, coupled with great looking, satisfying gore, it is one of the best fighting experiences you’ll ever. When you couple it with the series’ revolutionary Nemesis system, it creates an unforgettable experience. All of the randomly generated Uruk generals and captains have different personalities and weaknesses, and their ranking system works naturally. If one of them kills you, they rank up and remember you when you come back for revenge. It feels personal.
Other than just slaughtering Uruks, you can brainwash them and add them to your own army to conquer different forts. It leads up to a final fight with that forts General for a challenging, satisfying and personal fight.
Just Cause 3
Just Cause series always came with the premise of “If you can see it, you can reach it.” level of open-world gameplay. With its second game blowing everyone away with its sheer map size, activities you can do, satisfying destruction system and dozens of different vehicles and gadgets, Just Cause 3 comes back to improve upon everything the second game brought to the table.
We all know what JC is about: Over the top action with tons of explosions, physics-defying combat, hijacking enemy vehicles and traversing the absolutely huge world with Rico’s grappling hook, wingsuit and parachute combo. It is one of the biggest, most fun open world games to date if you can get past its mediocre story that is just there to justify its extremely fun action.
DmC: Devil May Cry
Devils are back, and the Dante is back too to kick their butts. Devil May Cry rises from its ashes yet again to teach action game developers how to create smooth, combo-oriented combat. Sure, the story and characters are great with a little bit of clunky dialogue here and there, but DMC’s biggest pro comes from its combat.
You have a big arsenal of melee weapons, coupled with your dual pistols and angel-demon modes that change your playstyle. Like all previous DMC titles, you can chain all of them together in a single, long combo. It is challenging, satisfying and extremely fun. If you’ve never played DMC before, start from its first game and play your way through this one and start waiting for DMC 5.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
Sleeping Dogs takes you to the city of Hong Kong and gives you the control of Wei Shen, an undercover cop trying to take down the Triads from the inside out. The world is atmospheric and Hong Kong is nothing like other open-world game maps. Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition mixes the gunplay and melee combat very well.
On the one hand, Wei can take down groups of enemies with Batman Arkham-style timed combat with counter attacks. On almost every melee fighting situation, there are a lot of environmental finishers you can use to brutally take down your enemies. On the other hand, gunplay is centered around a simple cover-to-cover system.
Story missions are varied to a great extent and come together with all of the gameplay elements we mentioned before. While it is not the most polished open-world action game, it tries different things on many aspects and succeeds in doing so.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Before his leaving from Konami, Kojima gave us one more big prize: MGS V. In the last entry to the legendary game series, we take control of the Big Boss once again to rebuild our Mother Base and take revenge from the ones that took it from us. Gameplay-wise, Metal Gear Solid V is one of the best games ever made with tons of different gear and combinations, different gameplay elements and a great open world.
Of course, Kojima did his thing once again with a mind-blowing story that will leave your jaw dropped at the end of it.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
CD Projekt Red was arguably the best RPG developer when their masterpiece The Witcher 2 hit the markets, but they definitely became the industry leader in RPG games when they released The Witcher 3. Once again, you control Geralt of Rivia to complete his story arc once and for all in his next personal mission.
With an open-world that is filled with variable side-quests, interesting events, alive characters, an extraordinary storyline and superb gameplay, The Witcher 3 is easily the GOTY of 2015; some even say that it is the best video game to this date. The game is the proof of what video games are capable of, be it on creating real worlds and stories or on the technical level.
We have also written about some games like Witcher 3, in case you want to see.
Assassin’s Creed Origins
Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series became a tradition with frequent releases and honestly, kind of made gamers bored of it because of it. Gameplay elements became repetitive and the story-telling became predictable; it even came to a point that Ubisoft started releasing their games without debugging them, one example being AC: Unity.
Origins came to fix all of that and we can say that is mostly succeeded. It is the biggest AC game to date with different cities with different architecture, a compelling story, a looting and leveling system to grind and more mission variety than every other AC game before. Combat isn’t as simple as before with more strategic choices during fights and more enemy types. If you took a break from AC series, Origin is the perfect game to come back.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a great open-world video game to look out for. The environment in this game is very attentive to details and makes your gaming experience very exciting as well. Moreover, this action-adventure game was developed by the same people who created GTA 5, so, rest assured, because you’re in for a thrill. Though it doesn’t feature any web-slinging like Spiderman, you surely get a lot of action going on in the game. Set in a beautiful open-world environment that is inspired by Southern, Western, and Mid-Western United States, this game’s timeline is in 1899. You’ll be controlling an adventurous outlaw as he ventures into several missions with set objectives. This game has cool firearms, explosives, enemy-combats, and when you are not on a mission, you can just roam around and explore the world.
Sunset Overdrive
Sunset Overdrive is developed by Insomniac, who also made Spider-Man for PS4. This game is a blast for all the action lovers out there. It features rabid mutants, allows you to fly over rooftops, and much more. Who said you could swing in Spiderman only? Sunset Overdrive got your flying and swinging needs covered. However, it does have some interesting deviations from Spiderman. This game focuses a lot more on survival. Besides boasting a stylish setup, the players need to be very creative. You will have projects like building planes, uniting groups, and so much more to do.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
What could you wish for after finishing one Spiderman game? More Spiderman games! Fans of Spiderman PS4 love this one because it features Spider-man himself. The friendly neighborhood hero, here, is based more on Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spiderman. But, you still get the New York setting and the web-slinging part. It can’t match up to the level of the latest Spiderman PS4 but people find it great fun. You might find it easier to complete compared to the latest version but it does feature very realistic visuals of NYC. Also, you’ll be accomplishing interesting and challenging missions.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is one of the perfect choices to pick after you are done playing Spider-Man PS4. Not only do you get Spiderman in this game, but also a bunch of other different characters from Marvel comics. You’ll have several options to choose from when it comes to picking characters. This game is also very popular just like Spiderman PS4 because it features a lot of the fan-favorite characters from the Spiderman universe. You have Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Spiderman, and several others. The third version really amp ups the level of the gameplay since it features loads of action to keep you glued.
Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost of Tsushima is a popular video game that incorporates the thrill of filling the shoes of a Samurai warrior. Set in 1274, it shows an era where Japan is defended by Samurais. It also highlights the invasion of the Mongolian Empire into the island of Tsushima. They have unleashed havoc over the place to conquer the people. You will be playing as one of the last surviving samurai. This game also brings in dramatic elements as you will rise from your own ashes to protect your land. However, you’ll have to fight in the ways of a Ghost to free Japan from all the shackles. If you love combat-based open-world games, then you’ll be addicted to the Ghost of Tsushima.
Gravity Rush 2
Gravity Rush 2 is the sequel to the original Gravity Rush game that follows Kat as its protagonist. She is still looking for the clues behind her origin and is determined to solve the mystery. You will be taking up her role and will learn unique fighting styles to take on your foes. The game has special gravity attack styles and you need to manipulate gravity here. How cool is that! This is an exclusive game series that provides players with such a remarkable experience. The art design is very comic-book-inspired and totally blends with Japanese anime and manga visuals. There are beautiful cityscapes with unique characters and you can play this game on PS4.
Lego: Marvel Super Heroes
Lego: Marvel Super Heroes brings the best of both worlds by combining Legos with Marvel. If you ever wanted to see your favorite Marvel superheroes in cute little forms, then, your wishes have been granted. It features a huge lineup of over 91 characters to choose from. Conclusion
While Spider-Man is a great game, it isn’t one-of-a-kind in its genre and there are many other open-world action games with great worlds to explore and stories to unfold. We tried to compile a list of games that deliver just that; vast, open maps to travel and fun, different gameplay mechanics to keep things fresh. If you want to fly, explore, destroy and sneak your way through big open maps, jump right in!
