What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a refractive error often combined with near or far-sightedness. It happens when the shape of the lens or cornea changes from normal. Till now doctors have failed to understand the actual reason for it but according to researches it is mostly inherited.

Sometimes, an eye surgery, eye disease or an injury can lead to astigmatism. However, whatever the reason be, it can completely change how you see.

Symptoms of Astigmatism

The most common symptom of astigmatism is blurry vision. However, there are a few more symptoms of it:

●Squinting: when a person’s eyes do not align properly and look in different directions, it is called squinting. Most people with astigmatism try to squint their eyes to see properly. If you often squint to see properly, you might be suffering from astigmatism.

●Eye discomfort: if you regularly feel discomfort in your eyes, you might be suffering from astigmatism. Eye discomfort such as pain, irritation, sudden blinking, and tears are common in astigmatism.

●Headaches: continuous headaches can also hint towards astigmatism. The intensity of the pain can vary depending on the pressure you put on looking at an object.

●Eyestrains: tired eyes or burning sensation can all be due to astigmatism.

How is Astigmatism Diagnosed?

●Autorefractor: this a device used to diagnose astigmatism or refractive error if any. In this test a ray of light is sent in the eyes. Then the tester studies the way light bounces off at the back of the eyes.

●Eye Chart: this is the manual way of reading the condition of an eye. In this system, the tester asks the patient to read the letters and record any deviation pointed out by the patient.

●Keratometer: this device is used to measure cornea curves. Imperfections and distortions can indicate astigmatism.

●Phoropter: it is a binocular-like device that opticians use to test your eye. They ask you to see through it and change the lenses to help you see better. Your answer helps your doctor to prescribe a glass number.

How Can Astigmatism be Corrected?

There are predominantly two ways of treating astigmatism.

●Wear lenses/glasses: this is the simplest way of treating astigmatism. Where your doctor, after testing your eyes, prescribes a lens number through which you can clearly see near and far. The glass or lens works by refocusing light on the retina, which helps you see better.

●LASIK: LASIK to treat astigmatism is one of the most common eye surgery that helps solve the refractive error. The surgery is a simple one that works by using a laser in the cornea. The laser reshapes the cornea, which further changes how light travels through it and improves vision.

Why LASIK is a Good Option for Astigmatism?

●Quick, safe, and painless procedure: LASIK surgery can be completed quickly without any discomfort or downtime. You feel no pain or discomfort before, during, or after surgery. All you need to do is follow basic precautions after the surgery, and your eyes will heal within a few days.

●Achieve permanent vision correction: After LASIK, you don’t need to wear lenses or glasses, and as a result, you will get permanent post-surgery.
